Let’s face it: getting dressed up in our winter gear to brave the cold rarely results in a stylish outfit. But for many of us, that’s a sacrifice we’re willing to make to stay warm in our cold Ontario winters.
Luckily, you don’t always have to sacrifice style for comfort — you just have to know how to do it right!
Get Familiar With Layering
The key to a stylish winter outfit starts with layering. Layering is a huge trend that never really goes away, and really amps up during the winter months. It’s a practical way to keep warm and effortlessly stylish. Think turtlenecks, sweaters and coats all layered together, or even test out a skirt over a pair of thick but skinny pants for a warmer alternative to tights. Have a cute, but not entirely practical, sweater you want to wear? Grab a long-sleeved t-shirt and put it underneath to stay warmer in your more stylish clothes.
Make Your Boots the Main Attraction
There are so many reasons to buy a great pair of winter boots that you love, you look great in, and that are up to the task of keeping you warm. Show off your ankle boots with a pair of cuffed pants. Consider knee-high boots with a cute skirt. Investing in high quality, stylish boots really pays off, and there’s no need to hide them away under a pair of pants.
Use a Belt With Your Coat
If you have one winter coat, wearing it every day, year after year can start to feel a bit repetitive — even if it’s a coat that you really love. But if your coat is still in great shape, you don’t need to splurge and buy a new one in order for it to feel new again. Consider adding a statement belt to your coat by cinching it at the waist. This trick works with wool coats and puffer jackets alike!
Incorporate Faux Fur
There is something so luxurious and stylish about faux fur in the winter! Feel free to embrace this trend throughout the cold months, as it’s a great way to keep yourself warm as well. Look for faux fur coats, hats, scarves and other accessories to add an extra layer of style and warmth to any outfit.
Get a Statement Hat or Scarf
Windy, snowy and cold weather isn’t exactly conducive for a good hair day, and practical hats don’t always add anything in terms of style to your outfit. But if you look hard enough, it’s easy to find a great statement hat to add to your wardrobe that will keep you warm as well. Scarves also work well for adding style, colour and fun to an outfit, so start experimenting with different ways to use scarves – whether wrapped around your head or simply tied a different way around your neck.
